Stretcher Bars - The Backbone of Canvas

Canvas has become a preferred medium among the artists to display their art and photographic talents. Hence, it has become necessary for the artists to get quality canvas bars to make canvas stretcher. A canvas stretcher is a frame, usually rectangular in shape, which is used to take the strain of a large canvas and present a smooth and even surface to the artist to work upon. The main purpose of using it is to keep the canvas taut and stretched so that an artist work is not hampered by folding or creases. They are available in different depths and in a variety of sizes.

Gallery wrap stretcher bars are used to stretch gallery wrap canvas prints that provide an enduring interior décor to any home or office. A stretcher frame made of gallery wrap bars serves as an internal frame for stretching the canvas to create a three dimensional effect. As the canvas print is wrapped around the stretcher, the gallery canvas prints are canvas prints without any frames. Paintings displayed in this way look cleaner and fetch good price too. Typically, high quality wood like Pine or Cedar is used to manufacture gallery wrap stretcher bars. They are available in a huge array of sizes and the thickness of the bars determines how far the image stands away from the wall.

A canvas stretcher is generally found in five styles – medium (standard duty), light duty, medium/heavy duty, heavy duty and the super heavy duty. A ready to use canvas bar is very rare and so customers buy a set of stretcher bars that can be assembled to form a frame. Rectangular frames are the most common as most artists prefer their work in landscapes or in portrait modes. Many stretcher bar warehouses also offer the service of customizing the dimensions on the request of the clients.
